haircare routine for fine straight hair

Over the years my haircare routine has changed a lot! In high school I hardly used any products, and straightened and blowdried my already pin-straight hair everyday...I'm cringing just thinking about it! Now I feel like I use a lot more products but am very careful about trying not to damage my hair. I let it air dry everyday and rarely use heat on it.

I've done a lot of trial and error finding products that work for my specific hair type and I'm pretty happy with my routine right now so I thought I'd share what I've been using lately! I have very fine straight hair so I tend to get oily roots very quickly (I have to wash my hair every 2 or 3 days max!) I also have seborrhoea which causes flair ups on my scalp of itchy, dry, flaky patches so it's been an interesting journey trying to find a routine for oily roots and a dry scalp lol. Probably tmi but maybe this will be helpful if you're experiencing the same thing...I do use a prescription hair lotion when my flair ups get really bad (usually in the winter) but for the most part it's really manageable with my current routine.

My current routine for the summer looks like this:

Amika Reset Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil

Amika Reset Clarifying Gel Shampoo

Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask 1x a week

Ouai Leave-In Conditioner and let hair air dry

Ouai Finishing Crème if I need to style my hair

I like to change up products depending on what my hair needs at the moment and especially when the weather changes. Here are all the products that I've been loving for the past year or so and how I incorporate them into my routine!

I think the Reset shampoo from Amika is my favourite shampoo of all time! It works so well to keep my oily roots under control since it's a clarifying shampoo. It gets rid of all the oil without leaving my hair feeling stripped! The conditioner is a very interesting texture and is almost like a thick foam. I don't use this every time I wash my hair (and never on my roots) but I like to use it if my ends are feeling dry.

The Amika Reset Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil has been a game changer for my scalp! It really helps so much to reduce the amount of itchy flaky flare ups I get and is definitely an essential part of my routine now! I apply this before I wash my hair (on a dry scalp) and it feels a little tingly before washing it out. Would highly recommend if a dry itchy scalp is something you also experience!

Another shampoo and conditioner that I'm a big fan of is the 3D line from Amika. These two are great for my fine hair cause they help with volume and thickness without weighing my hair down or adding any extra oil! I use the conditioner more in the fall and winter and tend to skip it in the warmer months.

I never thought I'd be a fan of hair masks because of how oily my hair gets but I just had to find the right ones and figure out how best to use them. I only use hair masks and conditioner on the very ends of my hair to help with any dryness or frizziness. The Amika Instant Shine Mask is soo nice! It makes my hair super shiny and you only have to leave it in for a minute which I love! The Coco & Eve hair masque is for days when I really need extra hydration cause it's super rich. Makes my hair so soft and it also smells incredible!

Ouai Leave-In Conditioner $26

Lets talk about some Ouai products next! I am a huge Ouai fan and definitely think they're worth all the hype! My favourite product I've tried from them is the Finishing Crème! If you have frizzy hair this stuff is a lifesaver! It just helps to smooth everything out without adding any oil and really is the perfect finishing touch! The Leave-In conditioner has been so perfect as an alternative for regular conditioner cause I find that's all the hydration my hair really needs in the warmer months.

I air dry my hair everyday so I really enjoy using the Wave Spray and Air Dry Foam to add a little bit of texture to my hair without being crunchy. Although my hair is super straight, these two products do actually help to give my hair some wave. It's not a super pronounced wave but I'll take what I can get lol

Some other products I like to use as alternatives to conditioner are the Amika Detangling Primer and the Curl Corps Defining Cream! Both add hydration without being too heavy for my hair (the Detangling Primer I use in the summer and Curl Corps in the winter cause it's a lot thicker). The Amika Moisture and Shine Cream is nice because it's very similar to the Ouai Finishing Crème except a little less thick. It really helps to hydrate and smooth frizzy ends.

Dry shampoo is an essential for my oily hair because it helps me extend my washes for at least one more day. I think my all-time favourite dry shampoo is Perk Up from Amika cause it has everything I look for in a dry shampoo: no whitecast, removes oil, doesn't leave a buildup and it smells amazing! I've gone through so many bottles of this and will definitely continue to repurchase!

Another dry shampoo that I really enjoy is this one from Ouai. I'd say it's pretty similar to the Amika dry shampoo and it works really well for my hair! This one does have a bit more of a whitecast but it blends easily into the hair! I also really enjoy the scent of this (although it is a little strong so beware if you're sensitive to scents).

And that's basically everything that I've been using on my hair lately! As you can see I really enjoy Amika and Ouai products because I find they work really well for my hair! (I do have an affiliate code for Amika where you can get 10% with the code LILYYTAY). Another brand I've been enjoying more recently is Briogeo and I have a review up on my Instagram if you're interested! Hopefully you found this helpful if you have a similar hair type and maybe you found a new favourite! As always, let me know if you have any questions xx
